Gateway Tutor (GT) is an academy that provides mainly tutoring services to students living in Lewiston-Auburn, Maine. It is a state approved supplemental educational services provider to district schools.
The academy uses the latest technologies to provide tools that should improve independent reading, writing, math, and problem-solving skills for struggling students, mainly from the immigrant and low-income families who are at risk of falling behind.
The academy provides a community-based alternative adult learning service for immigrant parents who cannot read or write in any language in order to enhance the education of our local immigrant community.
The program educates and teaches adults the English language by having local multilingual teachers to help improve adult reading comprehension and writing skills, as well as preparing those interested to participate in the GED diploma and certification programs.
The academy also provides mentoring services to immigrant youths. Our approach to combining tutoring and mentoring programs helps students overcome obstacles inside and outside of the classroom. We will continue to make a measurable impact in the lives of many students in the communities that we are serving. Some of our mentoring services will include the following:
Social Change – Help the immigrant youth improve on their behavioral skills to make positive social changes.
Social Skills – Work with the immigrant youth and families to help build social skills.
Technology – Helping the youth stay safe online when they use the internet.
Cell Phone – Help the youth stay safe on their cell phone.
Wellness – Help the youth learn about healthy eating habits and nutritional food.
Gateway Tutor Academy is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Both breakfast and lunch meals will be provided to all eligible children free of charge. To be eligible to receive free meals, children must meet the income guidelines for reduced-price meals in the National School Lunch Program. The summer food program for kids is offered at all of our sites in Lewiston, Maine, at varying intervals between June and August.
Meals are to be provided at the Gateway Tutor sites each summer. In addition, the academy provides fieldtrips and other related activities (based on availability) during the summer. Acceptance and participation requirements for all activities within the program are the same for all children, regardless of race, color, nationality, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.
The Academy serves the community as the hub for such services as tutoring for kids, alternative immigrant adult learning, mentoring for immigrant youth, and the summer food program. It has been providing services with valuable structured after-school programs which includes but not limited to tutoring, mentoring, summer food and recreational programs to our area’s youth. These programs have empowered our youth with skills that promote positive values, healthy habits, and education. The mission of the academy is to help students achieve academic success.
In our community, there are external factors and obstacles students face every day that can interfere with their ability to learn and develop good behavior. These are gaps that stand between students and their potential. That is why we believe most students require additional support academically, socially, and emotionally. The academy addresses some of these obstacles that interfere with the student’s ability to LEARN and provides services such as tutoring and mentoring, as well as other important activities to help students close the gap between what they need and what the regular schools provide.
